How does the new Device Selection work?

The Device Selection has been comprehensively revised. Now all four output options are at your choice:

  • EXP – Transfer to USB stick
  • Needle – Direct transfer to the machine via USB cable
  • Deco – Transfer to the USB stick for Deco machines
  • Serial Port – Direct transfer to the machine via serial port

CutWork is compatible on all machines with embroidery capability, while PaintWork and CrystalWork are only compatible with certain machines. Please find further information concerning compatibility in the latest BERNINA accessory catalog.

Note: It is not possible to direct connect to artista 200 / 730 although the needle icon is not greyed out. To transfer the design to the machine you need to export the designs to a USB stick.

Why can’t I select the Fill icon in the Object Properties?

As long as your object has no fill color defined you cannot select the fill. Therefore fill the object with a color of the Palette to be able to select it.

Why have the color boxes in the Palette two areas?

Because they are multi-functional. With the upper area you can color the contour and with the lower the fill of your object.

What can I do when my export icons are greyed out?

In some rare Windows 8.1 installations there are some “Rights” issues that do not allow the BERNINA DesignWorks and EConPC software to communicate. The shortcut that you can download below runs the software with administrative rights which solves the issue immediately.

Shortcut Windows 8.1 64bit
Shurtcut Windows 8.1 32bit

  1. Extract the shortcut from the zip file on the Desktop and run the software by double clicking on it.
  2. Permit Windows to run the software.
  3. After that you will be able to export to BERNINA machine through EConPC.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT delete the current Desktop shortcut of BERNINA DesignWorks that the installation added. The shortcut is needed from the software in order to run properly.

How can I send designs directly from PC to machine?

Through the device selection you can directly send designs to the machine by using a USB cable.

If you get the connection failed error message you need to manually start the PC to machine interface, called Universal Communication Server (UCS). Go to Task Manager > Services > UCS > Right-click > Start.

For the artista 200 or artista 730 machines that use the Windows Mobile Device Center you need to follow the steps below:

  1. Go to Windows Start and enter “cmd” in the command line.
  2. Right-click the “cmd.exe” and 'Execute as Administrator'.
  3. Enter the first line and press Enter.
REG ADD HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RapiMgr /v SvcHostSplitDisable /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
  1. Enter the second line and press Enter.
REG ADD HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WcesComm /v SvcHostSplitDisable /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
  1. Restart your computer. This allows the Windows Device Center to work. If it is not working, start the UCS service as described above.

Why is it not possible to send designs to the artista 200 or artista 730 via USB cable?

These machines need the ART format for direct stitch out. As DesignWorks outputs EXP only, direct connect does not work and the error message “feature not supported” appears. The solution to transfer you design to your artista machine is to export the design to a 1GB USB stick.

Why do I see old hoop names at the end of the hoop list?

This issue affects Maxi and Jumbo hoop as they were renamed in the update. The designs saved by DesignWorks keep some hoop information in the file saved. Before the update that renamed the hoops in the list, the designs were saved with the old hoop names. Hence, when opening an older file with an old hoop name, the program does not match it with any of the new hoop names, and just adds the old hoop as a custom hoop.

To change the old hoop name, simply select the appropriate new hoop and save the design.
