Adapt an embroidery design of your choice to the size of the lid. If working with the embroidery software, digitise a circle of 12.5cm diameter around the design, stitch length 8 mm. Embroider fabric remnants and cut out to 12.5 cm plus seam allowance.

If not working with the software, sew over the cut-out on the 12.5cm line with large stitches. Pull bottom thread tight so that the seam allowance is pulled to the inside. Press over seam allowances. Iron batting in centre below the embroidery. Thread smocking elastic through the stitch plate or the pintuck guide, depending on your model of machine. Oversew elastic with zigzag stitches from the right side. Pull elastic tight and knot off ends.
