Materials

  • 65 cm polka-dotted pale pink fabric (Benartex) – fabric 1
  • 15 cm polka-dotted turquoise fabric (Benartex) – fabric 2
  • 5 cm, and 2 times 110 x 2.5 cm for 2 bias strips, polka-dotted pink fabric – fabric 3

Cutting out

Fabric 1
1   1 x top front to fabric fold

Instructions

Corded piping

  1. Join the two bias strips of fabric 3 at one of their short edges and sew together in a diagonal line.
  2. Trim seam allowances and press them open.
  3. Place cord in the fold (center line) on the wrong side.
  4. Fold one strip half over cord, wrong sides facing. Then sew together with long straight stitches, using presser foot no. 12C and the needle in the far right position.
 
Front
  1. Pleat skirt front at front fold according to pattern sheet.
  2. Sew top front to skirt front with right sides facing, using the bulky overlock foot no. 12C and sew in a sufficiently long piece of piping at the same time (needle position at 2-3 notches to the right).
  3. Sew the front decorative strip to the bottom edge of the skirt front.
  4. Sew the front hem facing to the bottom edge of the decorative strip.
 
Back
  1. Sew the fabric 2 decorative strip and the fabric 3 facing to the fabric 1 back as described for the front.
 
Construction
  1. With right sides facing, place front sections on back sections. Sew right side seam.
  2. Neaten the seam allowances.
  3. Sew a decorative stitch line (stitch no. 371) approx. 0.5 cm from the fabric 3 strip, using the open embroidery foot no. 20C.
  4. Sew the zipper into the left side seam and close the side seam. The zipper ends at the pink strip. Trim and neaten zipper accordingly.
 
Completing the dress
  1. With right sides facing, sew front and back facings together at the appropriate side.
  2. Neaten the bottom edge of the facing.
  3. Pin piping right sides facing to neckline.
  4. With right sides facing, pin or baste facing to neckline. Sew together, using the bulky overlock foot no. 12C. Take care to catch all layers (needle position at 2-3 notches to the right).
  5. Trim/notch the seam allowances. Turn right side out.
  6. Fold the seam allowances at the zipper to the inside and secure with a few slip stitches by hand.
  7. Cover the buttons in fabric. To do so, follow the button supplier's instructions. Sew buttons to the front.
  8. Sew fitting buttonholes on the back.
  9. Sew satin ribbon onto pink front strip by hand.
  10. Fold hem under 1 cm twice. Hem, using the edgestitch foot no. 10C.

Pants

Cutting out

Patterns do not include seam allowances. Add 1 cm seam allowance and 3 cm waistband allowance.
The piping bias strips include seam allowances.
 
Fabric 1
1   2 x front, mirror-inverted
2   2 x back, mirror-inverted

Fabric 2
2 x strip A, 4 x 110 cm each
 

Instructions

Frill

  1. Press each strip A at centre of long edge.
  2. Gather using the Gathering Foot (level 1 – maximum amount of pleats).
 
Corded piping
  1. Make two lengths of corded piping from the narrow bias strips (110 x 2.5 cm), using the bulky overlock foot no. 12C and proceeding as described in the Child's Dress instructions.
 
Pants
  1. Place a front piece right sides facing on a back piece in each case. Sew side and inside seams.
  2. Slide trouser legs inside each other with the right sides facing. Sew crutch seam.
  3. Neaten all seam allowances.
  4. Fold and press top hem 1.5 cm twice. Edgestitch, using edgestitch foot no. 10C. Leave a seam opening of ca. 3-5 cm for inserting the elastic.
 
Completing the legs
  1. Pin the corded piping onto the bottom edge of the legs, right sides facing. Starting and ending at the inside seam, fold the ends of the piping to the wrong side in each case.
  2. Fold and press a seam allowance of ca. 1 cm at one end of the fabric 2 frill in each case.
  3. Pin frill to corded piping at the legs, trimming the end as required and sliding one end in the other. Secure with a few stitches if needed.
  4. Measure the circumference of the leg. Cut the wider bias strip (110 x 5.5 cm) to the required length (including the seam allowance). Sew together at the short edges with right sides facing. Press seam allowances apart.
  5. Pin this facing onto leg trim right sides facing. Use the bulky overlock foot no. 12C to sew the facing on in such way that the frill will protrude from the seam 1 cm and the piping is nicely visible in the end.
  6. Trim seam allowances if needed and press them towards the bias strip. Edgestich using the edgestitch foot no. 10C.
  7. Fold and press the remaining edge of strip A 1 cm under. Flip strip over inward. Edgestitch to sew together. Here again, leave a seam opening of ca. 3-5 cm for inserting the elastic.
  8. Topstitch 1 cm from the edgestitching to form a tunnel for the elastic.
 
Completing the pants
  1. Pull the elastic through the tunnels at the waistband and the legs. Cut the elastics to the required lengths. Sew the ends of the elastics together with stitch no. 16. Close the tunnel openings.
  2. Handsew the satin ribbon bows onto the outside seams at the elastic tunnel.

Crown

The size can be adjusted to the head circumference as required.

  • 70 x 20 cm turquoise fleur-de-lis print (Benartex) – fabric 1
  • 70 x 20 cm pale pink fabric (Benartex) – fabric 2
  • 70 x 20 cm very firm interfacing, e.g. S 133 from Freudenberg
  • 2 m pale pink satin ribbon, 6 mm wide
  • 5 pink pompons
  • 20 x 2 cm hook-and-loop tape
  • Edgestitch foot no. 10C

Embroider the number before cutting out the fabric.

Cutting out

1 x pattern piece 'Children's Crown' plus seam allowances from fabric 1, and 1 x the same pattern piece plus seam allowances mirror-inverted from fabric 2
     Fabric 1: The appliqué is on the center jag of the five jags
1x pattern piece 'Children's Crown' from interfacing S 133 (without seam allowances!) The iron-on side will be on the wrong side of fabric 2.

Instructions

With right sides facing, sew the fabric 1 and 2 pieces together, leaving open the bottom edge. Trim and/or notch the seam allowances in the corners. Turn right side out. Press the seams well into shape. Slide the firm interfacing into the crown with the iron-on side on the fabric 2 side. Fold bottom seam allowances in. Iron crown. Edgestitch all around the crown. Cut the hook-and-loop tape into two pieces of 10 cm each. Sew the hook part onto the right side of the crown (see pattern piece) and the loop part onto the wrong side of the other end of the crown. Cut the satin ribbon into five equally long pieces and bind them into bows. Handsew on the bows and pompons. Trim the ends of the bows if wished.
