Materials:

  • Fabric front piece A: 14 x 22 cm (5 1/2 x 8 1/2  inch)
  • Fabric back piece B: 14 x 22 cm (5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inch)
  • Fabric pocket C: 10 x 14 cm (4 x 5 1/2 inch)
  • Fabric lining D: 14 x 42 cm (5 1/2 x 16 inch)
  • Fabric loops E: 10 x 3 cm (4 x 1 inch)
  • Iron-on interlining: 40 cm x 25 cm (15 1/5 x 10 inch)
  • 1.5 m (1 1/5 yards) cord
  • 2 cord stoppers
  • 1 button
  • 1 sewing thread (optional embroidery thread for decorative stitches)
  • Needle for hand sewing

Preparations

  • Cut all fabric pieces according to the cutting layout. The seam allowance of 1 cm (aprox. 1/2 inch) is included. (front part A, back part B, small patch pocket C, lining D and loops E)

  • Reinforce fabric pieces A, B and C with iron-on interlining.


Tip:
 
The interfacing helps the bag to keep its shape over a longer period of time, to achieve clean decorative stitches and to sew beautiful buttonholes. It is advisable to test the buttonhole on a piece of scrap fabric and the chosen interfacing.
 

Sewing a buttonhole

  • Thread the bobbin thread into the finger of the bobbin case.
  • Attach the Buttonhole Slide Foot #3A and the slide-on table.

  • Select buttonhole 51 and press the i-symbol to edit the buttonhole settings.
  • Enter the length of the buttonhole using the button measurement function. Close the editing window with the x-symbol.

  • Set the buttonhole width (= stitch width) to 5.5.
  • Draw a parallel line on the fabric for pocket C approx. 3 cm below the narrow edge. Mark the center of the line.
  • From the center, mark half of the buttonhole length to each side.


Tip:
 
To achieve a beautiful stitch, the bobbin thread should always be brought up with the needle stop button and both threads schould be placed under the presser foot before starting to sew.

  • Sew the buttonhole. The complete buttonhole is sewn automatically up to the last stitch. The machine stops automatically when the buttonhole is finished.
  • Remove the Buttonhole Slide Foot #3A.

Combining sewing stitches

  • Attach the Open Embroidery Foot Sole #20 on the shank and mount the presser foot.
  • Press the +-symbol to open the combination mode.
  • Select the decorative stitch menu and open the folder 701. Select stitch 712.
  • Select the alphabet menu and select the first alphabet.
  • Enlarge the preview window with the arrow (see picture).

  • Select B.
  • Open the category for numbers and enter 335.
  • Minimize the preview window by pressing the arrow.

  • Open the edit menu with the i-symbol.
  • Select edit stitch combination.
  • Select the repeat symbol once so that the entered lettering is only sewn once.
  • Close the edit menu with the x-symbol.

  • Activate the pattern start (triangle symbol on the screen) so that the sewing pattern starts at the first stitch.
  • Draw a line in the lower area of pocket piece C and mark the start.


Tip:
 
The length of the stitch combination is displayed on the screen when the entire stitch combination is selected in the edit menu. To check the length of your stitch combination, make a sewing test to mark the exact position on the pocket piece.

  • Press the securing stitches button to automatically sew the specified number of securing
    stitches.
  • Place the marked line under the presser foot so that it is visible on the inner edge of the left leg of the presser foot. Start sewing the lettering along the marking. Sew out the lettering completely until the machine stops automatically at the last stitch.
  • Press the securing stitches button to add four securing stitches. Stop at the 4th stitch.

Combining decorative stitches

  • To create a new combination, the input field must first be cleared. To do this, open the edit menu, select the entire stitch combination, press the delete symbol and confirm the deletion. Close the edit menu with the x-symbol.

  • Select decorative stitch 401 twice. The last decorative stitch entered is active.
  • Open the edit menu and mirror the decorative stitch horizontally. Close the edit menu.

  • Sew out the stitch on the back piece B.
  • Design and sew out further decorative stitches as desired.
  • Select the +-symbol on the screen to exit combination mode and return to sewing mode.
  • Remove the bobbin thread from the finger of the bobbin case. Pull the bobbin thread up using the needle stop button. Place the upper and bobbin thread under the presser foot.

The Sewing Consultant

  • Select the Home symbol.
  • Open the sewing consultant.
  • First select the type of fabric to be used. For a thin cotton fabric, select the lightweight woven fabric setting.
  • Select the appliqué option for the application.
  • The sewing consultant will now suggest a suitable sewing stitch, needle, thread, thread tension and more.
  • Either attach the specified optional Reverse Pattern Foot with Clear Sole #34 to the sewing machine or use the Open Embroidery Foot Sole #20 already in use.
  • Confirm the stitch setting. The machine switches to the suggested stitch with all the necessary settings.

Sew the small pocket and loops

  • Press the bottom and side edges of the small pocket piece C over by 0.5 cm (1/4 inch) with an iron. Fold in the top edge twice by 0.5 cm and topstitch close to the edge.

  • Pin the pocket piece C to the front piece A with pins.
  • Press the securing stitches button.
  • Starting at the top right, place the fabric edge of the pocket under the presser foot so that it is on the right inner leg of the presser foot. Sew on the first side. Turn at the corner with the needle stop down so that nothing slips.
  • Sew the other two sides in the same way.
  • Secure the stitches at the end. The top edge remains open for the pocket opening.

  • Attach Presser Foot Sole #1 to the machine and select the straight stitch.
  • To make a loop, sew a tube from piece E with a 0.5 cm (1/4 inch) seam allowance, right sides facing. Then turn to the right side so that the seam allowance is on the inside.
  • Cut the 10 cm (4 inch) long side in half to create two 5 cm (2 inch) long loops.
  • Pin and sew the loops to the front piece A approx. 3 cm (1 inch) below the top edge (see previous picture).

Sew all pieces together

  • Sew the bottom edge of the front and back pieces (A and B) together, right sides facing.

  • Sew the lining fabric to the upper edge of the front and back pieces to create a tube.

  • Sew the side seams right sides together, leaving a turning opening of approx. 10 cm (4 inch) on one side of the lining piece.

  • Turn the smartphone bag through the opening to the right side.

  • Press the seams and close the turning opening with a seam close to the edge.
  • Fold the lining into the bag and press again.
  • Topstitch the top edge.

  • Cut open the buttonhole with the seam ripper. A pin at the end of the buttonhole prevents the buttonhole from being cut too far.

Finishing


Pull in the cord and fix the desired length with a knot below the loops. Optionally, attach the cord ends.
