BERNINA 770 QE: The best technology for quilters

Some sewing. Some quilting. Some huge possibilities. The BERNINA 770 QE combines innovation with plenty of space. The extended free-arm creates an extra-wide work area, with 254 mm space to the right of the needle for large quilt projects. The fast and quiet BERNINA Hook sews high-precision stitches up to 9 mm in width. The bobbin holds up to 70 % more thread than standard bobbins. Both the BERNINA Stitch Regulator (BSR) and the BERNINA Dual Feed come as standard. The BSR ensures beautiful, even stitches when free-motion quilting, whilst the Dual Feed effortlessly handles difficult and fine fabrics, or multiple layers, by feeding from both the top and the bottom. The B 770 QE can also be upgraded with an embroidery module to add a further dimension to your work.
BERNINA 770 QE 1/10: First steps

The BERNINA 720, 740 and 770 QE allow even absolute sewing novices to achieve excellent results. This video tutorial will take you through setting up your BERNINA, step by step. This ranges from threading to replacing the presser foot – all done in a few simple steps. The generously proportioned and ultra-clear touch screen with touch stylus pen also means it couldn’t be easier to change settings, such as the winding speed and selected stitches. The scroll function facilitates easier and more intuitive navigation through the program, and tips and further information on the individual functions and stitches are a click away via the Help function. The set-up program also features numerous options for individual settings, which gives you the chance to customise the BERNINA completely in line with your own wishes and preferences – from the language setting and the display colour scheme to the sound settings.
BERNINA 770 QE 2/10: Change stitches

The BERNINA 720, 740 and 770 QE make sewing decorative seams fun! Simply use the touch pen to pick out your choice of stitch on the large and clear display and then adjust the width and length of the stitch with the practical multifunction knobs. The decorative stitch menu lets you select your preferred choice of stitch from numerous available options. But that’s not all – you also have plenty of extra scope to fine-tune the selected stitch to get it just the way you want it, play around with the stitch density and length of the pattern or create a mirror image. All this can be configured comfortably on your display, which also lets you preview what the modified stitch will look like beforehand.
BERNINA 770 QE 3/10: Combining letters and stitches

As you will see in this tutorial, sewing text is child’s play with the BERNINA 720, 740 and 770 QE, even for total beginners. Simply select a font and type in the text that you want to sew. It is particularly quick and convenient thanks to the clear display and easy handling with the touch pen stylus. Once you have decided on a stitch, you can continue configuring the entire combination until you are satisfied with the end result. To make things easier, you can also use the preview function which illustrates the combination on the display. If your creation looks the part, the combination you have input is then automatically sewn. If you want to reuse your design at a later stage, it is easy to open your personal program and store your combination permanently.
BERNINA 770 QE 4/10: Sewing buttonholes and sewing on buttons

Sewing buttonholes and sewing on buttons is a breeze with the BERNINA 720, 740 and 770 QE. All you have to do is choose the buttonhole you want from the menu and then configure the cutting width using the multifunction knobs. BERNINA has also included a particularly smart feature to make sure the buttonhole fits: you can hold the button against the display and then use the multifunction knobs to configure the right button size. Once the buttonhole has been programmed, use the BERNINA buttonhole foot with slide to sew the buttonholes in a single step. This can be repeated as often as you want. You can also save the data for subsequent use. Finally, the optional presser foot number 18 or 20/20C and the button-sewing program make the process of sewing on buttons just as easy.
BERNINA 770 QE 5/10: Sewing with the BERNINA Stitch Regulator (BSR)

Free-motion sewing and quilting – creative techniques that allow you extraordinary scope to create new designs. The BERNINA 720, 740 and 770 QE will double your sewing fun, because the BERNINA stitch regulator, or BSR for short, makes free-motion quilting child’s play. Combi mode is active ( "+" icon on the screen). Select Combi mode again in order to get back into Single mode.

Can I use off-brand bobbins?

We recommend to use only BERNINA quality bobbins because using off-brand bobbins can cause unsatisfying thread tension and other problems.

The embroidery motif is too dense or not dense enough

The embroidery motif should not be enlarged or reduced on the machine by more than 20%.

What's the use of the hole and the screw at the back of the presser foot?

For attaching the seam guide.

A function and/or the "Information" icon has a yellow border

Touch the appropriate icon to see what changes have been made. Most changes can be undone with "clr".

The second side of the buttonhole does not finish at the starting point of the first side

Calibrate the buttonhole foot slide. Select "Setup", "Machine settings" and "Calibrate Buttonhole foot with slide 3A" and follow the instructions.

Can the buttonhole be saved?

Yes, but only in combination with using the buttonhole foot with slide #3A.

When positioning the motif, the hoop does not move

The function "Virtual positioning" was not activated when selecting the hoop. Activate the function so the hoop moves during positioning.

What is the yellow bobbin case for?

This is a specially developed bobbin case with high thread tension for the BERNINA hook that is particularly suitable for embroidery and quilting.

When does the hoop have to be calibrated?

When the machine is used for the first time.
If the center needle position does not match with the actual center of the motif.

How often should the machine be oiled?

The frequency of oiling depends on the number of the sewn stitches. We recommend to place a drop of oil onto the hook race before sewing for a longer period, but at least when the machine prompts you. When sewing bigger projects, you can oil the machine once a day.

The fabric puckers when I sew wide decorative stitches

Place tear-away stabilizer underneath the fabric to stabilize it and carefully remove it once you have sewn the stitches.

The machine sews on the spot

There may be several reasons for this:
The feed dog is down.
The stitch length is set very small.

The machine is running very slow.

Check the slide speed control on the front of the machine and move to the right. Here you can set the maximum speed setting when sewing with the foot control or use it to adjust the speed when working with the start/stop button.

When embroidering, the connecting stitches are not cut

The "Cut connecting stitches" icon in stitching mode is not active.
The cut length of the connecting stitches is set too high. To change this, go to "Setup", "Embroidery settings", "Automatic cut" and reduce the value.

The machine does not start embroidering

The attached Embroidery foot #26 and the needle plate have to be selected.

How do I decide which hoop to use?

Always use the smallest possible hoop the motif will allow.

Why are there two different colors of hoop templates?

The purple or orange template is used, depending on the model.

What's the use of the eyelet on the top of the machine?

For bobbin winding when the machine is threaded for sewing. The thread stands on the horizontal spool pin and is threaded first through the eyelet and then the pre-tension stud.

What are the holes on the top of the free arm for?

For attaching BERNINA accessories such as the binder attachment, circular embroidery attachment, hosiery darning hoop, and much more.

What should I do if the message with gears appears?

Cut off the upper thread, raise the presser foot, carefully lift the fabric to cut off the lower thread and any twisted threads. Do not pull! Remove the fabric. Remove the bobbin case, open the hook to check whether any thread is tangled in the hook area and remove it. Also check whether there is any thread under the needle plate. Replace the hook, bobbin case, bobbin and needle plate. Check whether the upper thread is threaded correctly and rethread if necessary.

The machine makes a buzzing noise.

The bobbin winder is activated.

The outline of the motif is skewed

Use the right kind of stabilizer and, if necessary, several layers depending on the fabric thickness.

From which model upwards can the Maxi and Jumbo Hoops be used?

From the 7-Series, although the Jumbo Hoop will have a limited embroidery area.

The screen is not responding

The screen needs calibrating. Select "Setup", "Machine settings" and "Display calibration" and follow the instructions on the screen.

The presser foot automatically lifts up slightly after lowering

The pressure foot hovering height is not set to 0.
Select "Setup", "Sewing settings", "Program buttons and icons" and set the value of "Adjustable hover position" to 0.

Whats the use of the vertical spool pin?

Necessary when using a second thread for example sewing with the twin needle.
For stacked (parallel wound) threads, use the vertical spool pin to allow the thread to evenly feed off the spool.
Important: use the foam pad as base.

The machine only sews backwards

The "reverse sewing" function is active. This can be activated or deactivated under "Information".

How do I set the language?

Click on "Setup", "Machine settings" and "Select language" and select the desired language.

Stitches with a stitch width of over 5.5 mm are only shown as a 5.5 mm stitch or a straight stitch

No presser foot is attached.
The 9 mm needle plate is not activated.

How much thread is still on the BERNINA Jumbo Bobbin when the sensor indicates that the thread is running out?

A Jumbo Bobbin holds approximately 100 m, depending on the thread. The lower thread sensor notifies you when there is 10% of the thread remaining. This means that there is still approximately 10 m of thread on the bobbin.

How should the upper thread be threaded for the double needle?

Both threads follow the usual threading path, but one passes to the right and the other to the left of the tension disc

The upper thread indicator reacts even when the upper thread is not broken

Check if there are any pieces of loose thread in the path of the upper thread and remove them.

The upper thread indicator is not responding

The upper thread indicator has been deactivated in "Setup". Select "Setup", "Monitoring functions" and "Activating the upper thread indicator".

The lower thread indicator is not responding

There may be several reasons for this:
The door of the hook cover is open. Close it.
The sensor of the lower thread indicator is dirty and needs cleaning.
The lower thread indicator has been deactivated in "Setup". Select "Setup", "Monitoring functions" and "Activating the lower thread indicator".
