  • Cotton Fabrics: According to the fabric requirements chart further below
  • Your favorite batting: 3 yards (2.8 m)
  • Spray starch, temporary spray stabilizer, pins and/or clips
  • Chalk marker, Rotary cutter, quilt ruler and cutting mat
  • Mettler Thread: 50 weight cotton for piecing, 40 weight cotton or polyester for quilting

Velasco Meadow

Velasco Meadow is a richly layered botanical that captures the nostalgic charm of vintage Liberty patterns. Handpainted in the Liberty studio, it blends feathery daisies and tiny scattered leaves with bolder floral clusters, creating a dense yet softly textured, romantic meadow.

Cutting Instructions

  • All measurements include a ​¼” seam allowance
  • "WOF" stands for "Width of Fabric"

Velasco – Meadow (A) cut:
  • (2) 6-1/2” x WOF strips. Sub-cut (9) 6-1/2” squares
  • (7) 3-3/4” x WOF strips. Sub-cut (72) 3-3/4” squares
Lasenby Silhouette – Maddsie Blossom (B) cut:
  • (3) 3-1/2” x WOF strips. Sub-cut (36) 3-1/2” x 3-1/2” squares
  • (6) 3-3/4” x WOF strips. Sub-cut (36) 3-3/4” x 6-3/4” strips
Wiltshire Shadow – Indigo (C) cut:
  • (1) 2-1/2” x WOF strips. Sub-cut (8) 2-1/2” x 2-1/2” squares
  • (5) 2-1/2” x WOF strips for binding
Wiltshire Shadow – Storm (D) cut:

Prepare the Flying Geese Blocks (36 units)

“Flying Geese” is a fundamental quilt block/ unit that is easy for beginners to learn. It appears in various quilt blocks and is also used in the “Sawtooth Star".

  • Place (1) 3-3/4” Fabric (A) square on the left side of (1) 3-3/4” X 6-3/4” Fabric (B) strip, right sides together. Sew across the diagonal of the square from the upper right corner to the lower left corner. (Fig. 1)
  • Flip open the triangle formed and press. Trim away the excess fabric from behind the triangle, leaving ¼” seam allowance. (Fig. 2)

  • Place another (1) 3-3/4” Fabric (A) square on the right side of (1) 3-3/4” X 6-3/4” Fabric (B) strip, right sides together. Sew across the diagonal of the square from the upper left corner to the lower right corner. (Fig. 3) Flip open the triangle formed and press. (Fig. 4) Trim away the excess fabric from behind the triangle, leaving ¼” seam allowance. This creates a Flying Geese unit.
  • Square up each Flying Geese unit to a finished size of 3-1/2” X 6-1/2”.

Create the Sawtooth Star Blocks

The Sawtooth Star block is made with three rows. (See Fig. 5)

Row 1 and 3 :

  • Sew (1) 3-1/2” Fabric (B) square to the left side of the Flying Geese unit.
  • Sew (1) 3-1/2” Fabric (B) square to the right side of the Flying Geese unit.
  • Repeat to make 18 units.

Row 2:

  • Sew (1) Flying Geese unit to the left side of (1) 6-1/2” Fabric (A) square ensuring the point made between the two triangle is pointing to the center square.
  • Sew (1) Flying Geese unit to the right side of (1) 6-1/2” Fabric (A) square ensuring the point made between the two triangle is pointing toward the center square.
  • Repeat to make 9 units.

  • Assemble: Sew all three of your rows together. Ensure the top and bottom rows are facing opposite directions with the point made between the two triangles point toward the center square.
  • Press to the dark fabric or press seams open, depending on your preference.
  • Repeat to make 9 blocks, 12-1/2” square.

Piece the Quilt Rows

The quilt top is sewn together in rows. Rows 1, 3, 5, 7 are made of cornerstones and sashing. Rows
2,4,6 are made of the Sawtooth Star blocks and sashing. (See Fig. 6)

Rows 1, 3, 5, 7:

  • Sew (1) 2-1/2” x 2-1/2” Fabric (C) square to the left side of (1) 12-1/2” x 2-1/2” Fabric (E) strip.
  • Sew (1) 2-1/2” x 2-1/2” Fabric (D) square to the right side of the unit above.
  • Sew (1) 12-1/2” x 2-1/2” Fabric (E) strip to the right side of the unit above.
  • Sew (1) 2-1/2” x 2-1/2” Fabric (C) square to the right side of the unit above.
  • Sew (1) 12-1/2” x 2-1/2” Fabric (E) strip to the right side of the unit above.
  • Sew (1) 2-1/2” x 2-1/2” Fabric (D) square to the right side of the unit above.

Make 2 rows in this manner. Then alternating Fabric (C) and (D) squares, create 2 more rows
beginning with Fabric (D). This should create 4 strips that are 45-1/2 inches long.

Rows 2, 4, 6:

  • Sew (1) 12-1/2” x 2-1/2” Fabric (E) strip to the left side of a Sawtooth Star block.
  • Sew (1) 12-1/2” x 2-1/2” Fabric (E) strip to the right side of the Sawtooth Star block of the unit above.
  • Sew a Sawtooth Star block to the right of the unit above.
  • Sew (1) 12-1/2” x 2-1/2” Fabric (E) strip to the right of the unit above.
  • Sew a Sawtooth Star block to the right of the unit above.
  • Sew (1) 12-1/2” x 2-1/2” Fabric (E) strip to the right of the unit above.
Make 3 rows. The rows should consist of (3) Sawtooth Star blocks with the Fabric (E) sashing inbetween.

  • Assemble the rows: Sew the rows together in order from 1-7.
  • Ensure rows 1, 3, 5, and 7 are alternating with row 1 starting with the Fabric (C) square on the
    left, row 3 starting with Fabric (D) square on the left, row 5 again with a Fabric (C) square and
    finally row 7 with a Fabric (D) square. (See Fig. 6)

Quilting & Binding

  • Cut the backing fabric in half (54”). Join the backing fabric pieces together with a ½” seam allowance along the long edge and press the seam open.
  • Layer the top with batting, then backing fabric and quilt as desired.
  • Bind as desired with the Fabric (D) binding strips.
