Create Hourglass Blocks

Picture: Glen Lyon Sampler Quilt

You will create (8) 12-1/2” Hourglass Blocks with embroidered accents. Each block is made from Fabric (G) and (F). The blocks are made by creating the embroidered designs from oversized triangles on Fabric (G), piecing together with Fabric (F), and then squaring up to 12-1/2” unfinished.

Picture: Glen Lyon Sampler Quilt

  • Layout the blocks to create the square to better visualize which length to sew together. Ensure the embroidered flowers are paired together as shown in Fig. 7, you need (4) each of Version A and B.
  • Sew (1) Fabric (G) triangle to (1) Fabric (F) ensuring you sew along one angled edge of the triangle.

Picture: Glen Lyon Sampler Quilt

  • Repeat with the other two pieces ensuring you are sewing along the correct angled edge to create your block. See Fig. 8, note the fabrics are overlapped here to show the configuration.
  • Sew the two pieces together nesting the seam along the long edge. Fig. 9
  • Square and trim up the blocks by aligning the center point to the 6-1/4” marking on a large square ruler. Trim to 12-1/2”.
  • Repeat to create all 8 blocks with the embroidery arrangements.

Create Embroidered Borders and Cornerstones

Picture: Glen Lyon Sampler Quilt

Inner Border

  • Sew the (7) 2” x WOF Fabric (D) strips end-to-end with a diagonal seam. Subcut into (2) 2” x 60-1/2” strips for the left and right side and (2) 2” x 63-1/2” strips for the top and bottom.

Tip:

For more accuracy when attaching the border, measure the vertical top, middle and bottom of the quilt top before subcutting the strips. Take the average as the measurement for the inner border.
If your blocks are smaller or larger this will help to square up the quilt with the inner border.
Repeat to add the top and bottom inner border.

Outer Embroidered Border

  • Sew the (7) Fabric (G) 3” strips together diagonally creating one long piece. Measure and cut the two left and right borders to 3” x 63-1/2”, or to the measured length of your quilt top.
  • The outer border is embroidered. The designs are small and are not too dense, so there is no need to cut extra fabric and then square up the border.
  • You will embroider the cornerstones, embroider the left and right borders, the top and bottom, and then attach to the quilt.

Picture: Glen Lyon Sampler Quilt

Create Embroidered Cornerstones

Embroider “Glen Lyon 41” for 2 border cornerstones on the (1) 4” x 11” Fabric (G) strip. Fig. 18

Picture: Glen Lyon Sampler Quilt

To embroider the cornerstones:

  • Hoop a piece of OESD Stabilstick Tear Away in the Large Oval Hoop.
  • Float a piece of OESD Ultra Clean & Tear under the hoop for additional stabilizer support.
  • Embroider Color 1 for placement stitch.
  • Place your Fabric (G) 4” x 11” strip over the placement stitch and stitch remainder of design.
  • The design is embroidered with a 3-1/2” square around the motif. Cut the square on this line after embroidery.
  • Repeat for another hooping to have 4 total 3-1/2” squares.

Picture: Glen Lyon Sampler Quilt

Left and Right Embroidered Border

Embroider top & bottom of each strip with designs “Glen Lyon 38” & “Glen Lyon 39”. Fig. 19

Picture: Glen Lyon Sampler Quilt

  • Hoop a piece of OESD Stabilstick Tear Away in the Large Oval Hoop.
  • Float a piece of OESD Ultra Clean & Tear under the hoop for additional stabilizer support.
  • Embroider color 1 for placement.
  • Place your border strip aligning the top of the placement line and complete the design.
  • Repeat for the bottom ensuring you use the other design which has been mirrored for the bottom. Align the bottom of the strip to the bottom.
  • Embroider and remove as much stabilizer from the back as possible.

Picture: Glen Lyon Sampler Quilt

Embroider the middle of the left and right strip with ‘Glen Lyon 37’. Fig. 20

  • Measure and mark the center of the border piece.
  • Hoop a piece of OESD Stabilstick Tear Away in the Large Oval Hoop
  • Float a piece of OESD Ultra Clean & Tear under the hoop for additional stabilizer support.
  • Embroider color 1 for placement. There are lines for the left and right and the center line you marked above.

  • Attach the left and right borders to the quilt top, pinning and aligning the center, top, and bottom.
  • Embroider and remove as much stabilizer from the back as possible.
  • Repeat for the other side.

Picture: Glen Lyon Sampler Quilt

Top and Bottom Embroidered Border

  • Repeat the instructions above to embroider the top and bottom border in the center. The measurements should be the same, or measure your quilt top and bottom and adjust as needed.
  • The top and bottom border include the cornerstone block with the embroidered flower. After embroidering the border strips, attach the cornerstone to the left and right of the finished border piece.
  • Sew the top and bottom border onto the quilt, aligning the seam of the cornerstone and border to the edge of the blue inner border.

Quilting & Binding

Picture: Glen Lyon Sampler Quilt
