“We’ve got an incredible community of sewists and teachers here at Daley By The Yard,” said co-owner Erin Daley. “We want to share this with everybody, whether they can afford a sewing machine or not.”
Daley By The Yard started out as a father/daughter venture, which stemmed from Tom and Erin Daley working together in Tom’s landscaping business. Erin was the garden designer and Tom the foreman of the crew. Erin had spent several years in the sewing machine industry and attended Lasell College for Fashion Design in Newton, Mass. before joining her father’s landscaping team. In 2011, they decided to open a sewing shop together. Tom, whose background is in electronics and machinery, attended a sewing machine technical program at BERNINA of America in Aurora, Ill. Erin is an enthusiastic sewist, teacher, do-it-yourselfer, and crafter. She coordinates and supports Daley By The Yard’s teaching and part-time staff. Through her experience in the industry, Erin is familiar with all makes and models of sewing machines, and all are welcome for Dealer classes. Since opening in 2012, Tom and Erin’s reputation for sewing machine service has grown, and another Daley has joined the team. Michael Daley also comes from the landscaping business, is very mechanical, and has become an asset to the shop. Daley By The Yard is a second-generation family business with a goal of providing excellent customer service, serving the community, and creating a fun, informative sewing atmosphere for Greater Boston’s sewists.
Daley By The Yard has also started a new club program of classes with expert teachers for every interest. Jo Connolly, a columnist for Designs in Machine Embroidery magazine, teaches machine embroidery. RoseMary Koch, founding member of Rising Stars Quilt Guild in Lexington, Mass., leads the Quilt Club. Cindylee Gee, a graduate of the Fashion Institute of
Technology, runs the fashion-focused Wearables Club. Erin Daley teaches the Foot Club, which demonstrates how to use all of the different presser feet found in sewing. Starting this Fall, the Dealer will offer a new program for young adults that focuses on sewing and crafts.
“Sewing isn’t just about hemming pants, it’s a great way to express yourself and create something very individual,” Erin Daley said. “This is why we want to teach the recipients of the donated machines how to use them to their full potential. They can learn a new skill, meet new friends, and discover the joy of sewing.”
Daley By The Yard is an authorized BERNINA Dealer that carries the full line of BERNINA sewing machines, software and accessories. The Dealer also offers a variety of fun sewing, embroidery and quilting classes for people of all skill levels. “It is our goal to give each and every customer the personal attention they deserve,” said Tom Daley.
