Measurements for the Embroidery-Flower Quilt

Our measurements are in inch/imperial system. The finished quilt measures approx. 27 1/2 x 27 1/2". Suitable are fabrics/scraps of minimal 6" up to 38 x 38" in various designs. For details refer to Materials above and Cutting of Fabric below.

Schedule Tip:

The large flower designs by Kaffe need between 60 to 120 minutes to embroider, depending on design, machine, embroidery module and embroidery speed. It might therefore be worth starting the embroidery and then cut the other fabrics into the respective pieces.

Cutting of Fabric

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

Fabric 1 (pink): 4x border strips, size 6" x fabric width

Fabric 2 (yellow): 2x squares, size 10 7/8 x 10 7/8". Cut the two squares diagonally once to make 4 triangles.

Fabric 3 (green): 2x squares, size 5 7/8 x 5 7/8". Cut the two squares diagonally once to make 4 triangles.

Fabric 4 (orange): 2x squares, size 5 7/8 x 5 7/8". Cut the two squares diagonally once to make 4 triangles.

Fabric 5 (grey): 1x square, size 20 x 20" or 12" x fabric width. The fabric is fussy cut after embroidery.

Fabric 6 (purple): 4 strips, size 1" x fabric width for the flange.

Fabric 7 (bright yellow): 4 strips, size 2 1/2" x fabric width for binding.

Fabric 8: 1x backing, size 38 x 38"

Stabilizers:

  • 1x Batting, size 38 x 38"
  • 8x Embroidery Stabilizer Stitch-n-Tear, suitable to the Midi Embroidery Hoop, size 12 x 16"
  • 4x Vlieseline Soluvlies (wash-away stabilizer), suitable to the Midi Embroidery Hoop, size 12 x 16"

Tip:

This project is based on quilting techniques, the measurements indicated are in " (inch). For piecing we use a 1/4" seam allowance and recommend using the Patchwork Foot #97D with Guide. It eases exact guiding of the respective seam allowance.

  • Remember to confirm the stitch plate and/or presser foot in the touch screen whenever you change.
  • Hoop the starched fabric together with two layers of Stitch-n-Tear and one layer of wash-away stabilizer into the Midi Embroidery Hoop. (Alternatively the Medium Hoop can be used, then reduce the designs to fit).

Tip:

Use temporary adhesive to stick the embroidery stabilizer with the wash-away stabilizer and the fabric.

Embroidery

  • Select the stitch design. We use the Kaffe designs folder 11 and select the large flower 3.
  • The design remains centered in the embroidery hoop and size remains unchanged.
  • Embroider the design.
  • Cut back excess stabilizer.

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

  • Continue stitching the other flowers, for example 12, 16, 17.
  • Cut back the wash-away stabilizer, then wash it out. Tear away excess stabilizer layers.

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

  • For the Fussy Cut we prepared a template of 5 x 5", respectively with seam allowance of 1/4" a template of 5 1/2 x 5 1/2".
  • For that template we "upcycled" a colored plastic folder.
  • Place the template with the grain over the embroidery and mark the cutting line, then cut out, 5 1/2 x 5 1/2".

Patchwork

  • For the flange, press the 1" strip in half, wrong sides together.
  • Mark the flange to the suitable length (20 1/2") and mark the center.
  • Pin the flange to the four sides.
  • Turn the corners downwards in a 45 degree angle.
  • In the corners, cut back excess strips.

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

  • The flange is "basted on". For this we adjust the needle positon 2 to the right, within the tolerances of Foot #97D and straight stitch plate.

Basting

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

  • Place the backing (cut 38 x 38") flat on a suitable surface, wrong side up.
  • Place the batting (cut 38 x 38") on the backing and smooth it out gently.
  • Lay the patchwork top, right side up, on top of the batting, leaving a 4" seam allowance on either side and smooth gently until there are no wrinkles. The excess seam allowance is required for computerized quilting in the hoop.

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

  • First, pin the sandwich in the center, at the corners and at the middle points of each side, close to the edges.
  • Second, beginning at the center, pin diagonal lines outwards to the corners.
  • Then again, starting at the center, pin horizontal and vertical lines out to the edges. Continue basting until you have basted a grid of lines about 6" apart over the entire quilt.

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

  • For basting, attach the Reverse Pattern Foot #1D and activate Dual Feed.
  • Select the straight stitch and set the length to 6.
  • Reduce the upper thread tension to 4, that will ease unpicking the basting.

Tip:

For basting use the Walking Foot #50 (optional accessory).

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

Tip: Models with basting stitch

  • For example B 770 and B 790.
  • Use stich 21, which is programmed to stitch all 4 stitches only to achieve a max. stitch length of 24 mm.

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

Tip: models with longstitch function

  • For example B 770 and B 790.
  • Use the straight stitch and activate the long stitch function in information, so that only each second stitch is sewn (achieve a max. stitch length of 12 mm).

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

  • As pinned, baste the quilt, then remove the pins.

Quilting

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

Prepare the machine for stitching in the ditch:

  • Thead the machine with Mettler Silk-Finish Cotton 60 in needle and bobbin.
  • Select stitch 1302, stitch length default 3 mm.

Computerized Quilting

  • Attach the Drop-Shaped Embroidery Foot #26, the embroidery module and slide-on table (recommended for embroidery hoops/projects this size).
  • For quilting in the embroidery hoop, go to the Setup Program and select the material thickness, set to 7.5 mm. That will make sure that the hoop does not shift while the needle is still in the fabric.

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

  • Hoop one of the large triangles, parallel to the diagonal seam, centering the triangle corner.

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

  • In the Kaffe Design folder, select design 22, its size of 4.7 x 8" fits over the large triangle.
  • Attach the hoop to the module. Check the design placement by tapping on the individual corner points, move or rotate it with the multifuncion buttons if neccessary.
  • Let the machine quilt the design.

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

  • Proceed in the same way to quilt the other large triangles in the embroidery hoop.

Quilting the border

  • We will combine design 32 and 30 from the Kaffe folder.
  • This preview shows how the selected designs will work together. To check the effect, we reduced the designs to 50%.

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

  • Mark the center of each side of the border, using a basting stitch.
  • Mark the corner lines with a basting stitch, these are in line with the inner edge of the flange.

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

  • For the first half of a border, hoop the quilt from the middle of the border to the front, aligning it parallel and at a distance of 2" to the flange.

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

  • Select design 32 and mirror upside down. Enlarge the size to approx. 9.8" (approx. 122%).
  • Attach the hoop to the module. Place the design between the basing stitches with approx. 3/8" distance to the flange.
  • Let the machine quilt the design.

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

  • For convenience, hoop and quilt the other front sides in the same manner. Make sure to check placement of each design after hooping and adjust where necessary.

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

  • For the second half of a border, hoop the quilt from the middle of the border to the back, again, aligning it parallel and at a distance of 2" to the flange.

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

  • Design 32, deactivate the upside down mirroring.
  • Attach the hoop to the module. Place the design between the basting stitches, at an approx. 3/8" distance to the flange.
  • Let the machine quilt the design.
  • Hoop and quilt the other sides in the same manner.

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

  • For the corners, hoop the first corner "front right", centered in the embroidery hoop.

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

  • Select design 30, to enlarge, turn off proportional enlargement, enlarge the design to approx. 4 x 4" to fit in the corners.
  • Turn the design by 270° to make it look like first and last stitch are contiuning the border quilt designs.

Binding

Bind the quilt, using your preferred method or follow our method for binding:

  • Attach Foot #1D, select stitch 1303.
  • Join the 2 1/2" strips at 45-degree angle into one long strip, until having the required length to go around the edge of the quilt, plus 20" for corners, beginning and end.

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

  • Cut the starting end of the binding at a 45- degree angle and fold in 1/4". Wrong sides together, fold strip in half lengthways, keeping the raw edges level, and press.

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

  • Attach Foot #97D with Guide, activate Dual Feed. Attach the Straight Stitch Plate. Select stitch 1302.
  • Starting at the center of an edge, place the doubled binding on to the wrong side of the quilt, keeping raw edges level.
  • Stitch the binding in place with a 1/4" seam allowance, starting 1/4" from the diagonal folded edge, securing the first stitches.

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

  • Sew until 1/4" before the corner, then turn the project and sew at an angle 45-degree off to the corner the quilt.

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

  • Fold the loose end of the binding up, making a 45-degree angle.

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

  • Keeping the diagonal fold in place, fold the binding back down, aligning the fold with the last raw edge, and the binding raw edges with the next side of the quilt.

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

  • Continue stitching 1/4" in from the fold and sew the other sides and corners towards the end.

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

  • Tuck the finished end of the binding inside the diagonal starting section and sew, add a few securing stitches.
  • Attach the 9 mm Stitch Plate and Edgestitch Foot #10D (or the Reverse Pattern Foot #1D or the Walking Foot with Guiding Sole #50).

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

  • For topstitching, we used the Combi Mode and created a stitch consisting of 3 x 3 mm long straight stitches and a short, narrow zigzag of 2 mm width and 0.75 mm length and adjusted the zigzag needle position to align with the straight stitch. You can save your customized stitch into the Personal Memory.

Picture: Kaffe Fassett Embroidery-Flower Quilt

  • Turn the folded edge of the binding on to the front of the quilt and topstitch, folding as you go.
  • Fold mitered corners and continue topstitching until you're done.
